Abstract

In 40 blood samples which were each divided into 3 sterile test tubes, the following was measured within 24 hours of withdrawal and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months later: the water content of the serum, the serum haemoglobin, and the serum protein content. The statistical analysis of the results showed clear interrelations between the changes of the serum protein content and the serum haemoglobin on the one hand and the water content of the serum and the degree of haemolysis on the other hand. But in each blood test the haemolysis followed a different time function. By measuring the alcohol concentration, the haemoglobin and the water content in the stored blood samples it is possible, by calculating the individual rates of change in the serum water content, to make a precise statement on the alcohol concentration in the fresh blood specimen. The arithmetical steps required for this purpose are described.
