Abstract

In this article the authors explore whether the wide-spread perceived threat of gangs in the schools is genuine, or whether it is merely the product of a growing paranoia that is being fed by those who profit from society's terrible fear of inner-city violence. While the unceasing publicity surrounding gangs and drugs has resulted in a widespread fear of violence in individual schools and districts, the authors suggest that school administrators, teachers, parents, and police officers may be overreacting to the gang problem. They urge common sense instead of hysteria. (Abstract Adapted from Source: Phi Delta Kappan, 1994. Copyright © 1994 by Phi Delta Kappa International)
