AUTHOR'S ABSTRACT:
This study examined the literature on childhood sexual abuse and chemical dependency among women. The need for clinicians to assess for sexual abuse in order to provide effective treatment was explored. Treatment issues for women survivors were reviewed in order to understand how to integrate them into chemical dependency treatment. Recommendations for working with women survivors of sexual abuse who are also chemically dependent were presented. Guidelines were developed from the literature review in an effort to assist clinicians in formulating effective treatment strategies for women survivors seeking substance abuse treatment. The resistances clinicians might have to discussing sexual abuse were considered. The guidelines combine various treatment modalities into an integrated approach that addresses both issues simultaneously. The importance of addressing both chemical dependency and sexual abuse issues at the outset of substance abuse recovery was emphasized. Abstinence as a precondition of treatment was examined, and more objective case formulation and treatment planning encouraged. A review of the literature indicated a high incidence of sexual trauma among women who seek treatment for chemical dependency. Unresolved issues from childhood sexual abuse may underlie substance abuse and if not treated may lead to relapse. The guidelines indicate the complex issues involved in providing substance abuse treatment for women survivors. Timing is significant to the effectiveness of certain interventions and the complexity of dual recovery from chemical dependency and sexual abuse can be difficult.
