OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this study was to provide a comparative analysis of the research on dating violence and spouse abuse through a review of the literature.
METHODOLOGY:
This was a non-experimental exploratory review of the literature.
FINDINGS/DISCUSSION:
The overall violence rates in dating violence ranged from 12% for high school students to 36% for college students. High levels of violence occurrences were found among students from lower to upper middle class homes. Males and females were both found to be perpetrators and victims of dating violence. Reliable information is not available about gender differences, however reciprocation of dating violence between partners is found regardless of gender. Jealousy, alcohol, insecurity, rapidly changing norms for sexual behavior, ambivalence about intimate relationships, possessiveness, and misunderstandings were found to be the identified contributing factors in dating violence. Also, long-term dating relationships and sexual involvement were found to common in violent dating relationships. Marital violence and dating violence had some similar contributing factors including violence in family backgrounds, alcohol use and abuse, and intense emotional investment. Differences between dating violence and marital violence included sources of conflict (i.e. housekeeping was a source in marital violence but not in dating violence), presence of children in marital violence and absence of children in dating violence, and the financially dependent role of the wife in maritally violent relationships.
AUTHOR'S RECOMMENDATIONS:
The author suggested that intervention begins at the point of acknowledgment of the problem and public awareness and education programs can assist in the acknowledgement.
