Abstract

VioLit summary:

OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this article by Henkoff was to examine the increase in juvenile violence in the United States with a focus on prevention as a cure.

METHODOLOGY:
This article was a non-experimental exploration of youth homicide, abuse and suicide.

FINDINGS/DISCUSSION:
The number of youth arrested for murder has increased 55% in the last decade. Youth arrested for other violent crimes and adolescent abuse have both increased as well. Child abuse and neglect has increased 40% since 1985. Records from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) indicate that more adolescents die from gunfire than from any illness. NCHS records also indicate that homicide is the second leading cause of death for juveniles between the ages 15 through 19 and the leading cause for African Americans in the same age group. Juvenile violence affects African Americans most with exception of suicide, which affects Anglo Americans more. Guns are a major concern regarding adolescent violence in that more than 75% of adolescent homicides involve firearms and most adolescent suicides are committed with guns.

AUTHOR'S RECOMMENDATIONS:
The author suggested that there are several things which can be done to reduce violence including: programs to help parents with parenting skills, programs that teach children how to manage anger nonviolently, and policies which increase gun control.
