Abstract

The literature concerning reactions to rape, with special reference to the social meaning of rape, is reviewed. While the latter is seen as a major determinant of reactions to rape, reference is also made to other concepts which may assist the professional who is required to render services to women who have been raped. Proposals for intervention and reform are suggested.
