Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore a potential social psychological system to expand the safety net by reviewing previous research on occupational prestige. First, we investigated past studies that employed sociological approach to examine occupational prestige. As a result, occupational prestige is found to be constant across countries and across generations. Secondly, we surveyed social psychological studies regarding occupational prestige. In social psychology, occupational prestige has been discussed from sex-typing or career guidance perspective. Finally, we focused on perceived prestige as taking pride in one's job. Based on the findings of several surveys, we pointed out that perceived prestige differs with age and gender, and is possibly related to violation and accident.
