Abstract

Each of 399 Coast Guard Reserve officer candidates and 137 SPAR officer candidates was interviewed independently by one of two psychologists and by a psychiatrist. The bases of evaluation were complex and covered (1) ability to pass the academic training, (2) the ability to withstand psychological pressures and tensions of the training program, and (3) ability to withstand the trauma of combat and the demands of service life. The interview rating was quantified on a 13-point scale. The product-moment correlations of the psychiatrist's evaluations and those of the psychologists were .830 ± .011 for the Reserve officer candidates and .850 ± .016 for the SPAR officer candidates. The data are analyzed also in terms of frequency of occurrence of different degrees of agreement and disagreement by the two interviewers and in terms of the locus on the 13-point scale.
