Abstract

Based on the characteristics of heavy haul railway tunnel fire, which is usually accompanied by a large number of combustible, narrow inner space and poor ventilation condition, theoretical analysis, taken reference of oxygen-limited combustion and energy conservation in tunnel, is provided to investigate the sealing suppression effect. A case was studied in detail for the purpose of elaborating the sealing suppression effect, results of which indicate that when the suppression strategy of sealing the tunnel portals was adopted, there always exists a critical sealing coefficient for tunnel portals beyond which the average gas temperature would drop to a lower level in a few hours, otherwise the average gas temperature would increase again after a short decrease. It also demonstrates that it is not the most reasonable strategy to inject water after sealing the portals completely as quickly as possible because of the limit of water storage. A relatively reasonable water injection velocity is about 50L/s in the case study.
