Abstract

Zhenggang Landslide with a huge volume of 47.5 million m 3 was a gigantic landslide whose instability threatened the construction and late security operation of Gushui Hydropower Station. It was composed of two sub-slides: I-zone landslide and II-zone landslide with different deformational features. Infiltration of rainfall in October, 2008 accelerated the landslide's large deformation and deteriorated its stability. In this study, the sliding mechanisms were researched mainly by means of site investigations. It was worthy of finding that in addition to water, geo-materials and structures of sliding bed were the two other main factors, which largely determined the shear strength of sliding surfaces and depth of instability respectively. At last, slip zones was analyzed and the main conclusion about these zones was that they were often the contact surface between colluvium and bedrock with thickness of 20 to 70 cm.
