Abstract

In a representative study on employees aged 20 to 65 years in Northern Switzerland, several criteria of sports practice and motivation to practise sports were examined. 1260 subjects working in 44 different factories employing more than 56 people were chosen at random and questioned. 36% of the younger men (20 to 42 years old) and 21% of the older ones (43 to 65 years old) were members of a sports club. The first motivation to participate in sports came mostly from friends, but hardly ever from international events. 21% of the subjects were in favour of the way the Olympic Games were conducted, 28% were somewhat critical, 41% were negative, and 10% had no opinion.
