Abstract

A panel of the US Institute of Medicine has drawn up a research agenda to tackle gun violence in the United States.

In its report the panel identified five “high priority” areas for investigation: the characteristics of gun violence; risk and protective factors; prevention and other interventions; gun safety technology; and the influence of video games and other media.

“Research on these topics will improve current knowledge of the causes of firearm violence, the interventions that prevent firearm violence, and strategies to minimize the public health burden of firearm violence,” the panel said.

The US has the highest rate of firearm related deaths of any industrialized country, with 11 078 homicides and 19 392 suicides in 2010. In addition, there were 73 505 gun related injuries that …
