Abstract

The sediment dynamics of a ridge and runnel system were observed on a mesotidal sand beach during fair weather conditions. Topographic surveys, grain-size-trend analysis and fluorescent-sand-tracer experiment show that sediment transport is clearly directed onshore on the ridge. However, neither growth nor cross-shore migration of the ridge was observed. The ridge is migrating towards the south at a speed of 25 m/day and a theoretical longshore transport rate of 16 $m^3M/m/day$ : transport rates on the ridge are 8 times less important. Such a difference is attributed to the complex flow pattern associated with the ridge and runnel system. Longshore transport appears to be controlled mainly by strong currents concentrated within the runnel during the falling tide. During the rising tide, sediment exported by the rip channel are driven towards the next southwards ridge. The position of the rip currents remained constant during the five days of observation. /// La dynamique $sacute{e}dimentaire$ dun $systgrave{e}me$ de barre et bamne a $acute{e}tacute{e}$ $observacute{e}e$ sur une plage $macute{e}sotidale$ lors de conditions de beau temps. Pendant la $pacute{e}riode$ d'observation, la barre a $migracute{e}$ de 25 mu vers le sud avec un taux de transport longitudinal $thacute{e}onique$ de 16 m3/m/j: les taux de transport longitudinal qui ont $acute{e}tacute{e}$ $mesuracute{e}s$ sur la barre sont huit fois moms importants. Une telle difference a $acute{e}tacute{e}$ $attribuacute{e}e$ a la $complexitacute{e}$ des regimes $d'acute{e}coulement$ hydrauliques se produisant au sein dun $systgrave{e}me$ de barre et baInes. Le transport longitudinal semble principalement $contrOlacute{e}$ par les intenses courants $concentracute{e}s$ dans la baine lors du perdant. Le sediment $explusacute{e}$ par les chenaux de chasse est $remobilisacute{e}$ , au cours du montant, vers la barre $situacute{e}e$ plus au sud. La position des chenaux de vidange demeure, quant a elle, constante pendant les cinq jours d'observation.
