Abstract

In 2006, Britain published its first ever counter terrorism strategy. Entitled 'Countering International Terrorism: The United Kingdom's Strategy' (HM Government 2006) it aimed to enable people to go about their lives free from the risk of terrorism. Included within this strategy were four distinct work streams designed to cover all areas of counter terrorism. This article explores how one of these, the PREVENT work stream, has been implemented 'on the ground' by police officers. Such exploration is achieved through the presentation of the early findings from a recent case study of PREVENT policing conducted by the author with the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.
