Abstract

The concept of community policing was articulated towards the end of the twentieth century, but the ideas and practices that are brought together within the concept have run through the history of policing. Focussing primarily on the English experience, but drawing comparisons and contrasts from continental Europe, this essay explores some of these ideas and practices. In so doing it identifies myths still prevalent in the history of English policing and stresses that the articulation of the concept was the product of a particular political and social moment.
