Abstract

The abuse of punishment is more dangerous than the greatest indulgence. Punishment is a poison which only in the most tender and prudent hands can become a remedy. At the present day we have outgrown the harsh methods of the past. Corporal punishment is almost entirely excluded from our schools. Some have argued that the effects of corporal punishment are wholesome. It acts like a tonic. However, corporal punishment is delivered by the savage, who has not patience to reason or explain. Corporal punishment can seldom be administered without passion.
