Abstract |
This is a report of 351 cases of traumatic spinal cord injuries caused by accidents which occurred in the region Rhone-Alpes region of France from January 1, 1970 through December 31, 1975; (1975: 4780000 inhabitants) -- a case rate of 1.27/100000 and a frequency rate of 25/100000. The mean age was 39 years, 3 months. The proportion of men/women was 3.68:1. The majority (79.7%) of the affected were born in France, 11.6% in the area of the mediterranean, and 6.9% in North Africa. The most frequent causes are motor accidents (32%), followed by motorcycle and bicycle (15%), sport accidents (7.8%), blows (7.5%). 0.8% Of injuries were caused by gun shots. The distribution of causes showed no specific trend for the 6 year investigation period. The distribution of injury causes is different for male and female victims. It differs according to race, age and occupation. The degree of severity of injuries depends on the type of the accident. Internal injuries are less frequent for motorcycle and bicycle accidents. Distribution was the same for all accident causes in the case of head injuries and fractures of limbs. Language: en |
