Abstract

Research by Flynn showed three primary factors of subjective reactions to lighting, "evaluation" (or "pleasantness"), "spatiousness" and "visual clarity" (or "perceptual clarityw" or, just, "clarity"). While earlier, British, researchers have emphasized color as determinants of clarity, light intensity determinants seem foremost. An experiment in which working plane luminance, ceiling luminaire luminance and area were varied and related to clarity was carried out. Regression analysis showed a substantial, though incomplete explanation of clarity from these results.
