Abstract

The operation of a motorcycle relies upon the safe and effective use of hand controls for steering, acceleration and braking. The frequent involvement of motorcycles in traffic accidents appears to be related to the ineffective use of the hand control operating the front brake, which is the principal control for braking the motorcycle. An experiment was conducted to determine the benefits of training to position the hand upon the brake control in advance of the requirement of brake control usage. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in brake activation time with the amended hand position.
