Abstract

Subjects viewed slides of symbol signs under difficult viewing conditions, simulating a building emergency situation. The subject indicated whether a symbol meant "exit" or not. Substantial differences in understandability were found among 18 exit symbols. Features that contributed to correct identification of exits and confusion from other messages were identified.
