Abstract

Failure diagnosis is a structured form of problem-solving behavior in which problem difficulty can be directly measured. It is shown that a high degree of component interconnectedness must result in increased difficulty in isolating a failed component. Recent research suggests that if component interconnectedness exceeds a given level (related to human cognitive limitations) then the expected value of diagnostic time can increase without bound.
