Abstract

The Forest Products Industry, like other "heavy industries" has for many years failed to plan and design for the human components of man-machine systems. This resulted in the humans having to adapt to poorly designed, illogical and hazardous work environments. The Occupational Safety and Health Act helped initiate the trend toward improved mill design. The rapid implementation of computer automation has provided additional impetus and opportunities for good man-machine design and modern plant design will provide five key areas for the application of Human Factors: Systems/Operations Analysis, Plant Design, Control Room Design, CRT Display Design and Training Programs.
