Abstract

Search for emerging targets was evaluated in discrete trials and in a period of continuous watch. Search time increased with number of background characters (NBC) and was faster for targets added to the display than for those which changed from background characters into targets. The rate of increase with NBC was the same for both target types in discrete trials but not in continuous watch. No vigilance decrement occurred, but the conditions under which one might be expected are described.
