Abstract

Ice-shedding occurs frequently on overhead transmission line in ice area, causing vibration on the line and making it jump up and down violently. The jumping of the conductors may reduce the phase-to-earth or phase-to-phase clearance, from which flashover can happen under severe conditions; On the other hand, it is likely to apply high dynamic stresses on the insulator strings, fittings and towers, and cause damage to them. In heavy icing areas and long-span cases, the effects of ice-shedding are especially significant. In this paper, a simulation experiment was carried out to acquire the actual dynamic responses of the line displacement and tension, in which the natural ice covered line was simulated by lumped loads hanging on the line, and various span configurations as well as ice-shedding mode were taken into consideration. Furthermore, numerical computation is done according to the test conditions. Good agreement between the computational and test results is obtained which proves the validity of both the test and numerical methods. 2009 Chin. Sco. for Elec. Eng.
