Abstract

The relationship between incest and prostitution is discussed in this article through a case study of a 23-year-old incest survivor in South Africa. The first part documents the 2.5-hour interview with Lara Newman (a pseudonym), the woman who was sexually abused by her maternal grandfather. Lara Newman defined herself as a "whore" and narrated how the experience of incestuous abuse can train a victim to become a prostitute. Her story began when her grandfather raped her at the age of 4 and then continued to sexually abuse her for 8 years, until she was 12 years old. She further described the impact of the incestuous abuse on her family relationships, her relationship with her husband, and other psychological consequences she suffered. The last part of this article provides an analysis of Lara's story, which cited relevant literature on the relationship between incest and prostitution.
