Abstract

In Denmark accidents in rural areas often occur on road curves. From the end of the 1970s, the establishment of markings to guide road users through the curves has been permitted. Experiences of this type of marking obtained from before and after analyses are presented. It is shown that, when the general development of traffic is taken into account, the new type of marking has reduced the rate of accidents by approximately 60%. As the carrying out of the marking is relatively inexpensive, this gives a high rate of return on the costs of the projects carried out.
