Abstract

This article analyzes test results in order to determine whether the daily working schedule of six to seven hours of driving can lead to such mental fatigue that it can significantly affect a driver's sensory, psychomotor and metal abilities. The research was performed on a sample of bus drivers employed in urban public transport. Tests of alertness, mental response, stereoscopic vision, visual acuity, glare adaptation, oculomotor coordination and reactions to light and sound stimuli were carried out prior to and after driving. The results were compared showing a high level of mental fatigue at the end of a day's assignment, causing decline of the observed functions. The effects of fatigue on observed functions, studied individually, turned out to be different, proving that fatigue affects individual psychophisiological functions and related driving performance at different levels in individual drivers.
