Abstract

Clinical and laboratory diagnostic procedures for determining alcohol abuse and alcoholism (increased concentration of gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase in the serum, got and gpt) have been chosen for their accuracy. The study which involved the investigation of a sample of the driver population in Zagreb, has revealed alcohol abuse in 7.34% and alcoholism in 1.94% of the chosen population. They were predominently men of a lower educational level (manual workers) or truck drivers, between the age 26 and 50, and alcoholics were between the age of 28 and 64. The point is made that treatment usually yields good results bearing in mind the strong motivation for retaining a driving licence. With the enzyme levels returning to a normal concentration, after a period of abstinence, the previously deteriorated mental functions have been found to improve.
