Abstract

Currently, electronic control modules (ECMs) manufactured for International medium and heavy duty trucks do not store sudden deceleration data. However, even the most basic International ECMs have data on vehicle speed limits, trip information and fault codes associated with the vehicle mileage and engine run time at the time of accident. Extracting and analyzing this data, even though it may be limited, is an important component to an accident reconstruction. This article presents a procedure for connecting to International truck ECMs, extracting any potentially useful data, and preserving this data for accident reconstruction. Data extraction via the in-cab diagnostic port is described. Hardware and software requirements are discussed.
