Abstract

This article describes how devices such as accelerometers and global positioning system units can be used to develop drag and acceleration factors for accident reconstruction. By narrowing the drag factor range in collision analysis, the accident reconstructionist can concentrate their sensitivity testing on other variables that should be properly ranged to a greater degree than the friction values. The devices highlighted in this article are a useful way to develop good numbers for friction, acceleration, coast-down, lane-change or yaw and spin analysis. These units can also be used to test driver response and human performance. Even inexpensive units can be useful as long as they are tested to identify their accuracy.
