Abstract

Raymond McHenry was a pioneer in the field of highway safety technology. This article provides a detailed look at the contributions of McHenry and his associates. One of McHenry's early accomplishments was the development of an occupant simulation model for longitudinal collisions that was used to investigate the differences between European and American seat belt standards. This program represented one of the first computer simulation applications in the field of highway safety research. Based on the success of this program, McHenry developed other computer programs and models that furthered the understanding of automobile collisions, vehicle interactions and occupant kinematics. The work of McHenry's company, McHenry Software, continues today. The company's latest project is a comprehensive accident reconstruction tool to assist the accident investigator from initial evidence collection to final analysis.
