Abstract

When the lens of a digital camera is zoomed, the lens distortion values change and a labor-intensive process traditionally must be used to solve the camera's inner parameters and exterior orientation. This article describes a new camera calibration computational algorithm called "zoom-dependent" (Z-D) that allows for the use of zoomed imagery through the standard process of reference marking perspective view images. Z-D metrically calibrates the digital camera throughout the entire telephoto zoom range. This method corrects for lens distortion, principal point offsets and focal length for consumer grade digital cameras. Tests of the Z-D data confirm that it is a more efficient and equally accurate alternative to conventional photogrammetric means that require control points.
