Abstract

This article reports on a study that measured the actual lean angles of unaware riders as they negotiated a highway off ramp. Motorcycles used were classified as "sport," "tour," or "cruiser," based on their basic style and configuration. The authors first define the document physical limits of motorcycle leaning, then define the "willingness limit." They then report on observations of 97 motorcyclists. The authors found that two of the most aggressive "cruiser" riders and one sportbike rider approached the lean capabilities of their machines. The average lean angle actually exhibited by riders was much lower than the previously reported "willingness limit." The authors discuss the potential match or mismatch between motorcycles and riding style.
