Abstract

Terrorist suicidal airplane attacks that ravaged on September 11, 2001 twin towers in New York and the Pentagon building in Washington D.C. also caused many human casualties. This attack has changed the modern history as it marks the onset of the global war against terrorism. Several months after this unfortunate event, discussions were initiated about how the famous towers of the World Trade Center in New York collapsed and whether the collapse was due to some structural deficiencies. During the round table discussion held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This paper offers a summary of the engineering and life safety issues involved. The experts concluded that structural quality of the buildings can not be disputed and that no building could have withstood an impact of such type and intensity. The structure stood long enough to permit evacuation of most people from the burning towers. Suggestions are offered that may have helped those in floors above the impacts and resulting fires. - - - Stravični samoubilački teroristički napadi 11. rujna 2001. na tornjeve blizance World Trade Centra u New Yorku (WTC) zaprepastili su svijet. Prizori avionskih pogodaka i ruöenja golemih tornjeva postali su dio sva- čije svijesti. Ta je velika tragedija s puno ljudskih ûivota mnogo toga promijenila u suvremenom svijetu. Uzrokovala je jedan rat i nepovoljne gospodarske posljedice, ali i razmatranja öto bi trebalo učiniti da se slič- ne nesreće spriječe. Uz borbu za sprje- čavanje terora u svim dijelovima svijeta započele su i rasprave među struč- njacima o pitanjima moûe li se öto učiniti da se ötete od sličnih nesreća, prvenstveno gubici ljudskih ûivota izbjegnu ili barem smanje. Između ostalog raspravlja se i o razlozima relativno brzog ruöenja tornjeva nakon napada. Jesu li tome pridonijela i neka graditeljska rjeöenja?
