Abstract

Recent advances in sprinkler technology research have resulted in a new approach to high-challenge storage fire protection designed to achieve early fire suppression with the ESFR automatic sprinkler system. ESFR stands for "early suppression fast response". The ESFR concept depends on a proper balance of three separable factors: the sprinkler response (RTI), the actual delivered density (ADD), and the required delivered density (RDD). This presentation will include: (1) technical basis definition and methods of measurements of RTI, ADD and RDD; (2) development of the ESFR sprinkler; (3) fire test results; and (4) development of installation and approval standards.
