Abstract

This paper describes a fire test carried out by the Fire Research Station for the Greater Manchester Fire Service to study the development of fire in stacked furniture in connection with the fire which occured in the store on 8 May, 1979 in which ten persons lost their lives. The work has shown that the upholstered furniture (polypropylene fabric over poly-urethane foam) in a mixed stack, representing as nearly as possible that of the store, gave a very rapid development of fire with sufficient quantities of smoke and toxic gases to have made escape very uncertain from the floor of origin of the fire from two minutes after detection of the fire.
