Abstract

A measurement method is described which can approximate the local distribution of inhomogeneous aerosols; it is based on the evaluation of a number of optical extinction data using a computer tomographical method. A relatively small number of appropriate measurement modules are arranged only at the border of the area in which smoke density distribution is to be determined. The fundamentals of the appropriate data evaluation method are discussed. The principal characteristics of the measurement method are illustrated on the basis of simulation tests and practical results obtained by using a model measurement system. A measurement apparatus suitable for the execution of test series is described. The relevant real-time measurement system and the concept of the evaluating computer are outlined.
