Abstract

The heat release rate of combustible materials gives some insight into their behaviour in fire. In this paper three thermal methods and a gas analysis method of determining heat release rate are reviewed. Delayed response due to thermal inertia of the apparatus and radiative heat release when it is significantly great, are two major problems with the thermal methods. The gas analysis method, or the oxygen consumption method, is simple and more generally applicable; its accuracy can be improved by determining, in addition to oxygen, other gases in the effluent.
