Abstract

Flame detectors form an integral part of the fire and gas detection systems on many offshore and industrial installations. An extensive series of tests has been conducted to determine the most suitable types of flame detector for this application. The tests, which were designed to complement those specified in the relevant standards, were carried out using commercially available production models. The results indicate that the commonly used ultraviolet type detectors have major limitations especially for offshore applications, which are largely overcome by some types of modern infrared detectors.
