Abstract

The CFX-4 software has been utilised in axisymmetric, transient simulations of a round 20 m diameter pool fire in a stagnant atmosphere. Standard models of turbulence and combustion have been employed, without any extraneous turbulence sources at the pool or within the fire. Regarding the overall adequacy of these models, the simulations are only indicative at this stage. However, the analysis predicts the well-known instabilities at the base of the fire, and associated large vortices, at a frequency which agrees with experiments.
