Abstract

RACV was interested in exploring the issue of young drivers and their knowledge and management of fatigue. A literature review was undertaken relating specifically to young drivers and fatigue, exploring whether fatigue was a causal factor in young driver crashes, understanding young driver decision making and investigating whether any programs had been undertaken to address the issue of young driver fatigue. It was concluded that there is still little research evidence available concerning fatigue amongst young drivers, but that the lifestyle and motivational factors that influence young people in general are likely to increase their frequency of driving when fatigued. It was also concluded that fatigue-related programs for younger drivers may need to focus on fatigued driving in the context of lifestyle-related accumulated sleep debt, as well as the decision-making process that is likely to make them immune to public education messages, focusing on the potential risk of crash involvement and related consequences.
