Abstract

In accident studies where data are available only for large events there are certain advantages in arranging the observations for damages in decreasing order of magnitude and applying the theory of extreme values to those ranked variables. This is illustrated in this paper with reference to fire protection and insurance problems. Statistical properties of extreme order statistics relevant to these studies are reviewed. This is based mainly on a paper prepared for the International Summer School on Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work, Trieste, Italy, 10 July - 1 August, 1980.
