Abstract

Polyester resins containing antimony oxide and chlorinated or brominated flame retardants were tested for flammability at 20, 100 and 200[deg]C. An Oxygen Index type apparatus (BS 2782 Pt 1 1978, ASTM D2863 - 76) was used. The expected synergistic reactions were noted. The brominated compounds were superior to the chlorinated compounds, especially at the higher temperatures. Significant two factor and three factor interactions were found indicating the need for careful planning of experiments in this field. O.I. results, particularly at higher temperatures, are very susceptible to changes in the operating techniques.
