Abstract

In a recent research programme sponsored by the EEC and the French government, about twenty tests were performed on loaded external columns. In the first part of this study, the columns were hinged at both ends; in the second part the columns supported, at mid-height a beam which passed through the furnace. In all cases, the fire was made from a wood load generally equal to 39 kg per square meter of floor. The columns were always placed in front of the window, but some information was obtained for the heating of a column placed at the side of the window. The results notably illustrated the mechanical behaviour of hinged columns subject to thermal gradients, and especially the good behaviour of the columns connected to a beam. In many cases collapse did not occur despite high steel temperatures and stresses.
