Abstract

Summary
The present study comprises 332 patients with jaw fractures, occurring in 1970 and 283 patients, in 1980, all cases were treated at the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery, UllevÄl Hospital, Oslo, Norway. The aim of the investigation was to determine the aetiology of these fractures. Most noticable was a significant increment in interpersonal violence as a cause of such injuries, when comparing the causation in 1970 with 1980. With regard to the significant reduction in the traffic accident group in 1980, this favourable finding possibly reflects the importance of the use of safety belts in motorcars, the obligatory use of which was introduced by law in Norway in 1979.
