Abstract

Roughly one-fourth to one-third of fire detectors in U.S. homes are not operational. Based on studies in the late 1970s, dead or missing batteries are probably the principal reason for this growing problem. Within another decade, if trends continue, one-half of all U.S. home fire detectors are likely to be non-operational.
