Abstract

Accident prevention, over the last twenty years in construction and engineering, has improved (i.e. less deaths and accidents during construction). Construction and engineering researchers have tended to assume a linear approach to accident analysis, which has hindered the development of appropriate prevention techniques. To understand the mechanisms that contribute to accidents one should look at the project activities from a systems perspective. Such a perspective provides a fundamental shift in thinking and encourages safety issues to be visualized in a holistic manner. By adopting a systems perspective the interdependence and links amongst different components of a project system can be explored.
