Abstract

Investigations of fire occurrences are undertaken in various circumstances and for various purposes, which are exemplified. Where the sole object is to ascertain the cause of the fire, the investigation is best undertaken in the manner of a scientific research project. In this, the formation and refinement of a hypothesis proceeds in step with and orientates the collection of evidence. How this works out in practice is discussed in some detail. The outcome is, it is to be hoped, a conclusion in the closest possible conformity with the ascertained evidence and expressed clearly in a well-constructed report (not discussed in this paper).Practical necessity may require that this process be curtailed, but however long or short it may be, the different sources and kinds of evidence should receive balanced attention.
