Abstract

The paper reports on an analysis of trends in accessibility to employment for users of public transport in the Greater London conurbation from 1971 to 1981. Indicators of accessibility are calculated for different groups of the workforce in terms of their preparedness to travel and the number and location of jobs in their categories of employment. These are respectively estimated from a cumulative distribution of generalised costs typically borne by each group of workers in the Greater London Transportation Survey (GLTS) area and from Census employment data. Data for 1971 and 1981 together reflect the substantial changes that took place in the structure and location of employment in London between the two years.
