Abstract

Classification of a ship in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of Lloyd's Register of Shipping represents an independent assurance of safety. The methods adopted for assessing the design of a ship, its construction and its condition in service must reflect the level of reliability consistent with safety requirements. The role of Classification is outlined and the impact of changing practices which have led to increasingly complex installations of ships' machinery is discussed, notably a greater dependence on integrated systems. The use of reliability engineering techniques is discussed together with the subject of risk acceptance criteria. In connection with the use of reliability engineering techniques, the current activity in Lloyd's Register of Shipping and, in particular, the development of a reliability database are referenced.
